How to improve your pole dance and fitness grip
As a pole dancer, grip is key to making progress and increasing your strength. Grip is something that you may need some assistance with all year round. Not just during the hotter months, but also during the colder months to aid you in moving on the pole and getting stronger with your moves and the amount of things you can do with the pole.
Grip aid is something that has been so helpful for me as a pole dancer. Especially during the hotter months when all I seem to do is slip down the pole! It’s enabled me to do much more with my movements and get stronger quicker.
There are a few things you can do to help with your grip and I recently learnt that it isn’t all about the grip aid, although I will talk about a few different chalks and things I have used and that have helped. There are also other things that I am beginning to try which include strengthening my actual grip itself rather than just focusing on getting a good chalk grip to rub on my hands.
A few of the different chalk grips I have tried are:
MANA Liquid Chalk Maximum Grip:

I love this liquid chalk and it smells so good I want to eat it! Haha. It is nice to use and comes out quite creamy but quickly turns chalky when you apply it. It smells so good, however I have found I need to reapply quite often. Even so, I would still recommend it as it ticks so many boxes and it comes in a 250ml bottle. I use the Pink Bubblegum version but I am also looking forward to trying the Juicy Orange one too. For just £11,99 you do get a good amount included.

I like that this is specifically made for Pole dancers. You do get a lot less for your money than the MANA and it doesn’t quite smell as nice. I got my bottle of Pole Grip in my subscription box with Pole Boxx and so because I had it I tried it. It is good and I will defo use it, but I am not sure it is as good as some of the other options for me personally. I would always suggest to people to try it as something that works well for me may not work for someone else. For £11.99 you can buy 50ml on Amazon so you don’t get quite as much for your money either.
Enviro Grip

Enviro grip is often sold in pole studios and so I have used this before when training in different studios. I haven’t personally found it to be amazing, although it does the job I found I had to reapply often for it to work ok. This tends to be the case with a lot of grips unfortunately.

Dry hands is a really popular grip aid with great reviews from other polers and athletes. I have used it briefly when borrowing from someone else in the studio and it worked quite well. It seems to have the best reviews on Amazon and is something I will use again in the future.
Grip and Glow

I subscribed to the Grip and Glow monthly subscription box and this was sent in my first box. It smells AH-MAZING and although I haven’t used it yet I have used one of the other scents and I am assuming it is very similar to use.

I also subscribe to the Pole Boxx and the Grip and Glow body grip was sent in the May box. I love the Grip and Glow products. They all smell amazing. The only thing I have found is that you have to apply them quite a bit of time before you want to use it as it needs time to dry before it is effective. Although sometimes it will also feel wet, it does still grip the pole and leaves your skin feeling amazing. The great thing about the Grip and Glow products is that they do not leave your skin all chalky as they are not chalk grips.
Strengthening your grip through exercise
Strengthening my grip through exercise is something that I have never heard a pole studio mention before, or any training courses I have done. It was only until I started reading The Pole PT content that I discovered there is more to your pole grip than rubbing on some chalk or some other form of liquid.
I only really started using chalk to assist with my pole grip this year. In the previous years I have done pole, and taught pole I hadn’t used a grip aid and now I think of it I must have had a lot of strength to support myself from slipping as I have certainly been sweaty at the same time as managing to keep myself from falling down the pole! Haha
I decided to make a start on consciously working on my pole grip strength to aid my grip. Mainly because I am currently at the time of writing this working hard on my extended butterfly and D. Both moves require a lot of strength in the grip to aid the movement of the body.
I started by buying myself a kit which comes with a few different tools that help you to strengthen your fingers, wrists and hands. Actually working on the grip itself.

I bought this full kit from amazon for just £10 so I was not expecting the quality to be amazing but to just do its job.
Although having said that I am pleasantly surprised by how good this kit actually is and how well it does it’s job.
The kit includes different tools that you can use to strengthen your fingers, wrists, grip and this is something I am now going to start working on.
I will keep you updated with my progress and if you have any questions about it then do pop us a message on instagram HERE!
People have asked me about getting gloves and trying them to help with grip. I personally haven’t used gloves and wouldn’t really recommend it to my students, however if it is something that you may be considering you can always try it and see how it works for you personally.
You can find weight lifting gloves on Amazon starting from around £20.
